July 2022 SVJP Executive Roundtable with Steve Luczo

Supply Chains, Trust, and Long-Term Thinking: Lessons from Seagate's Former CEO

The global supply chain crisis did not start with the pandemic. According to Steve Luczo, former Chairman and CEO of Seagate Technology, the seeds were planted a decade earlier through years of underinvestment, overproduction, and a lack of transparency between manufacturers and suppliers.

Speaking at an SVJP Executive Roundtable, Luczo shared how Seagate transformed its approach by rebuilding trust with suppliers, reducing the number of vendor relationships, and committing to long-term strategic thinking over short-term gains. One memorable example: upon discovering Seagate owed a Japanese supplier more than either side had calculated, Luczo voluntarily paid the full amount. That single act of integrity reshaped the company's reputation in Japan for years to come.

His core message to business leaders is straightforward: you cannot manage what you cannot measure. Understanding every element of your supply chain, treating suppliers as partners, and playing the long game are not optional extras. They are essential to resilience.
